You can definitely explore Israel on your own, and plenty of people do. But a private guide will give you a deeper understanding of a complex country together with saving you hours of time and keeping you safe.
People often ask me whether they should hire a guide for their trip to Israel. I’m obviously biased (!), but I always try to be honest.
Yes, you can absolutely see Israel on your own, and a lot of people do make their way around the country independently.
But a private guide will add a lot to your trip. A while ago one of Israel’s top tour companies asked me to sum up why, and I gave them five reasons. Here’s the video, and I’ll go through them properly underneath.
1. Time
Time is the most valuable thing you have on a trip, and a guide saves you an enormous amount of both before and during your tour.
Before you arrive, instead of hours of research trying to work out what’s worth seeing, you can talk to me for a few minutes and I’ll build a programme around what actually interests you.
Once you’re here it helps that I know my way around. Whether it’s navigating the winding alleys of the old cities of Jerusalem, Jaffa and Nazareth or knowing exactly where that one thing you want to see is in the Israel Museum, it all means your time goes on enjoying the trip rather than working out where to head to next or going around in circles.

2. Understanding
Israel is an extraordinarily layered place: history, politics, geography, geology, even the wide range of flora and fauna, all meshed together, and it can be overwhelming.
My job is to filter and synthesise it, giving you what’s relevant and interesting to you in a way you can follow and, more importantly, enjoy. Because you’re on vacation, and it should be fun!
I can also act as an interpreter where needed, helping you interact more with locals and get a deeper sense of what people here think.
I like to say that instead of sightseeing it becomes an insight-seeing trip. It shouldn’t be an academic lecture; I want to help you have an amazing experience you’ll never forget.
3. Personalisation
A private tour is built exactly around what you’re looking for. The obvious part is your interests: a particular faith, a historical period, birdwatching, whatever it happens to be, and I’ll take you there.
But it’s also the things a group tour simply can’t offer: starting late or finishing late, an early start for a sunrise, a day off every other day. The whole shape of the trip is yours.
And it’s not just the sites and the logistics. I’ll customise my guiding to you. If you come with extensive background in some of the topics, we can talk at that level; if you’re looking for more of an introduction, then we’ll do that; if there are kids in the group, I’ll make things engaging for them too.
4. Flexibility
One of the things I pride myself on is keeping a finger on the pulse of the people I’m travelling with and adapting as we go.
A few real examples:
One guest fell in love with a particular painter at the Israel Museum, so a few days later in Tel Aviv I arranged a private viewing of that painter’s work in his former home.
Another couple kept asking about the birds they were seeing, so we tweaked the itinerary to add in a stop at a major bird migration site. It became the highlight of their trip.
And one family simply loved ice cream, so I made sure we found a brilliant spot every single day. That kind of thing only happens on a private tour.
5. A guardian angel
A guide also looks out for you. I’ll make sure you never get anywhere near a neighbourhood or a moment you’d be better off avoiding, and I’ll keep you from being taken advantage of, whether that’s in a market or a taxi.
The security situation in Israel is dynamic, and I’m always abreast of the latest guidelines, and can help you navigate them if needed.
The idea is that the only thing you have to think about is having the best time possible.
Is a private guide worth it?
Honestly, it depends on the trip you want.
If you’d be happy wandering with a guidebook, you don’t need me, and I’d say so. But if you want your time saved, the country properly opened up and the days shaped around you, that’s exactly what I do.
And, by the way, it’s not all or nothing. Quite a few people hire me just for one or two days on their trip and do the rest independently. I’m always happy to advise on where I think I’ll add most value and also help you plan the time without me.
Tell me what you’ve got in mind and we’ll take it from there.
